Our studio also specializes in woodcarving works; it is a field dealing with the manual shaping of wood using specially formed tools called woodcarving chisels. Using this technique, we are able to restore the originality of a given object.
Household accessories and furniture decorated with carvings can be found as early as the oldest cultures before our era, as well as in modern interiors. The carving technique and tools have remained almost unchanged over the centuries.
In furniture, we distinguish different types of carving according to their execution.
Chip carving is a type of deep carving where the ornament lies below the surface of the furniture. It often consists of simple, straight incisions, but can also create longer lines (flutes) or complex patterns (stars, flowers).
Semi-sculptural carving that slightly protrudes from the surface and is intended for frontal viewing. It is two-dimensional (height and width), without perspective, and usually depicts plants, animals, or human figures.
High relief is a three-dimensional carving that significantly protrudes from the surface. It allows for viewing the reverse parts of the ornament as well. It often depicts figural motifs, plants, geometric shapes, architecture, or landscapes.
Three-dimensional carving is a sculptural work in wood, fully three-dimensional and detailed from all sides. In furniture making, it was widely used in the Baroque period, either as a standalone element or as part of the furniture's construction.
Openwork carving is a cut lattice where the material is pierced to create a three-dimensional grid. This delicate carving, with a motif elaborated from all sides, is used in furniture making as a filling for display cabinet grilles or as a decorative element for panels.
